Karl May is a 1974 West German biographical drama film directed by Hans-Jürgen Syberberg, starring Helmut Käutner as the writer Karl Ma. Durch die Wüste is the first full-length solo album by German keyboardist Hans-Joachim Roedelius, best known for his work with Cluster, Harmonia, and Aquarello. The title is German for "Through the Desert. The music on Durch Die Wüste was recorded over a two-year period from 1976 to 1978 at Conny's Studio outside of Cologne, Germany. Conny Plank and Dave Hutchins served as sound engineers and was co-produced by Roedelius and Plank. It was released by Sky Records in 1978.

Karl May was one of the most popular German writers of all time, noted mainly for books set in the American Wild West, Winnetou and Old Shatterhand series, set in the 18th and 19th century. It was Young Adult Literature in 1950/60; I owe it to Karl May and his adventure books to discover my passion for reading at the age of 12 to 14. After May’s release in May 1874 he went back to his parents in Ernstthal and started writing. The first known publication of a Karl May tale (Die Rose von Ernstthal) was in November 1874. It was a time when the German press was on the move. Between his two long imprisonments he had already contacted the publisher Heinrich Gotthold Münchmeyer in Dresden.

Durch die Wüste (Through the Desert) is the first book in Orient Zyklus series. Before the story was written, Karl May had written the short story version of this story titled Leitet (1876). When first published as a series in Deutcher Hausschatz magazine in 1881 until 1888 (seven years), this story was given a title Giölgeda Padischahnün (Under the Shadow of Padishah)
