Amos Leon Thomas, Jr. (October 4, 1937 – May 8, 1999) was an American avant-garde jazz singer from East St. Louis, Illinois. Thomas studied music at Tennessee State University. In the 1960s he was a vocalist for Count Basie, among others. In 1969, he released his first solo album for Bob Thiele's Flying Dutchman label. Thomas is best known for his work with Pharoah Sanders, particularly the 1969 song "The Creator Has a Master Plan" from Sanders' Karma album.

Leon Thomas’ second album for Flying Dutchman was a step up from his debut. Instead of the small group setting of Spirits Known and Unknown, The Leon Thomas Album features five horns and a rhythm section augmented by several percussionists. The extravagance was prompted by the good reception received by the first album. Thomas was already a veteran performer by the time Bob Thiele signed him to Flying Dutchman in 1969, having recorded for RCA in 1958 and as the featured vocalist with the Count Basie band in the early to mid-60s

Side one is the up-tempo jazz ride, as Thomas and company rip through a host of his own tunes, such as the scatted post-bop of "I Am" and the nearly bar-walking blues of "Come Along. But the side is graced by an absolutely stunning read of Milt Jackson's "Bag's Groove," with Harper leading a five-horn section
