1990's Shiftin' Gear was the second album from Swedish melodic rockers Alien. Led by songwriter and guitar hotshot Tony Borg, and with new vocalist Peter Sandberg (later of Snake Charmer), Alien had a very polished AOR/melodic rock sound along the lines of Bonfire and Aldo Nova.Shiftin' Gear is a very upbeat melodic rock album, if a bit more polished than the more popular hair metal bands at the time. Borg serves up plenty of catchy hooks and sweet melodies, and Sandberg proves to be a more than adequate replacement for Jim Jidhead (who was great on the Alien debut). The songs on Shiftin' Gear rock out a bit, but in the end the main vibe is that radio-friendly, soundtrack-ready AOR that was still big in Europe despite a move towards the grittier and sleazier sound here in the US. Standout tracks include the rockin' "Hold On, Move On" and "Turn on the Radio," but even the ballads are quite good.If you're an AOR/melodic rock fan, this album and the band's 1989 self-titled debut are well worth seeking out, though they're pretty tough to locate of these days. Fans of the Swedish AOR sound in particular will definitely not want to miss this classic Alien release.
