Britpop was a UK-based music and culture movement in the mid-1990s which emphasised "Britishness", and produced brighter, catchier alternative rock, partly in reaction to the popularity of the darker lyrical themes of the US-led grunge music, an alternative rock genre, and to the UK's own shoegazing music scene.
Favourite Britpop album? (self. submitted 2 years ago by Alexohmygollypixies. I was under the impression Britpop wasn't considered indie here, but with Blur's latest release getting attention I wanted to ask this question. Post Script Although I loved Britpop at one point I became disenfranchised by the constant stream of throwback bands that were promoted by the NME as the 'saviours of rock' or 'the new Oasis'. There was no one point where I said 'right, I'm going to stop reading NME', but their continuous push of mediocre bands has made the magazine less and less interesting to me. Also, every fucking day the top headline is some quote from Noel Gallagher. They have great blogs though.

But Britpop, by any other name, still would’ve been a phenomenon. Born in London in the early 1990s, in grimy pubs and bare flats, the scene offered a thrilling new soundtrack for young British life. Bands like Suede, Blur, Oasis, Elastica, and Cocker’s Pulp captured the charms and eccentricities of their country while also excising their frustrations with class and community, topping it all with a defiant, tongue-in-cheek glamour. But more than geography and quick wit twines the Britpop scene together. With this list, we are defining Britpop as the musical scene active in the United Kingdom in the mid-’90s.
The result: the first genuine Britpop album! Most Britpop track: For Tomorrow. Pulp - His ’N’ Hers album cover. After a decade chipping away with indie singles and the odd album, Jarvis Cocker became a national hero with Pulp’s fourth album. Although not as feted as Different Class, His ’N’ Hers cemented Cocker as one of the country’s best lyricists. Most Britpop track: Do You Remember The First Time? Elastica - Elastica. Elastica debut album cover.

Acts as wildly different as Britney Spears, Eminem and Korn were dominating the charts, whereas Brit-pop already seemed a little dated.
