Working in the Coal Mine" is a song with music and lyrics by the American musician and record producer Allen Toussaint. It was an international hit for Lee Dorsey in 1966, and has been recorded by other musicians including Devo in 1981. After Toussaint returned to New Orleans from the US Army, in which he served from 1963 to 1965, he formed a production company, Sansu (also known as "Tou-Sea Productions"), with partner Marshall Sehorn.

Lee Dorsey was a guy with a pretty strong work ethic - when he wasn't cutting R&B hits, he ran a body and fender repair business in New Orleans, and proudly proclaimed himself to be "The best body man in the Ninth Ward. Because of (or in spite of ) this, Dorsey sang more than a few songs about the indignities of holding down a job, and the best known was "Working in the Coal Mine," written by the great New Orleans pianist and songwriter Allen Toussaint.
Mining is very unpleasant work, but the incessant background vocals ("Workin' in a coal mine, oops, about to slip down") and Dorsey's enthusiastic delivery turned the song - about a guy who is so tired from work that he can't even have fun on Saturday - into a campy romp. An artist who didn't appreciate and enjoy real work couldn't have pulled it off, but Dorsey was the right man for the job. When he left the music business, he went back to bending fenders full-time. In 1985, the country duo The Judds released the song on their album Rockin' With The Rhythm. This was recorded at J&M Studios in New Orleans, which was where just about every hit from that city was put to tape in the '50s and '60s. I loved Lee Dorsey's songs. Back in the mid Sixties at KU, I could get AM radio stations from the South that played lots of R&B like Dorsey's songs & the soul artists like James Brown & Wilson Pickett.
