The Lost Album (Skyhooks album). The Lost Album/The Collection is a double-disc album by Australian glam rock band Skyhooks, released in 1999. The Lost Album was the result of 1990–1994 recording sessions, involving their classic lineup of the early-to-mid 1970s of which only three tracks had been released earlier-"Jukebox in Siberia" and "Tall Timber" in 1990 and "Happy Hippy Hut" in 1994
Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album is a studio album recorded by saxophonist John Coltrane for Impulse! Records that was first released in 2018. The recordings were made in 1963 during Coltrane's Classic Quartet period and lost for decades. Both Directions at Once was recorded in Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey on March 6, 1963, by saxophonist John Coltrane and his Quartet: double bassist Jimmy Garrison, drummer Elvin Jones, and pianist McCoy Tyner.
The Lost Album eavesdrops on a day in the short life of one of modern music’s giants in a period of turmoil. Coltrane is audibly striving to release himself from the shackles of traditional song structures here, despite still being drawn to their improv challenges, and simultaneously pursuing a more open, free-floating sound beyond song shapes and chords.
The first post-reformation album Out of True was phenomenal and arguably bettered all of their 80’s output put together in terms of tuneful sonic cacophony and barbed, hilarious lyrics. The follow-up Whets Not To Love? was riotously experimental, and next Insult to Injury, majestic yet erratic. This new one is as cohesive yet varied as Out of True and possibly its equal. It rocks, it bewilders, it shambles, it kicks ass and it makes you laugh and scratch your head and wonder what the fuck all that was about. It starts in a surprising fashion ¦
The lost album comes from a time when Coltrane and his band were experiencing a particularly fertile creative period, exploring and pushing the boundaries of jazz with each new album. They had just finished a two-week engagement playing at New York’s Birdland venue when they went into Van Gelder Studio with Bob Thiele during the week beginning 4 March 1963. The first session, held on Wednesday, 6 March, yielded the seven pieces that make up Both Directions At Once, while, during a session held the following day, Coltrane returned to the studio to record with singer Johnny Hartman.
The group was powerful, elegant, and scarily deep. It was also a well-proportioned framing device. It made an artist with great ambitions easier to understand. It is possible to hear conviction and morality in some of the classic quartet’s best-known music-like the devotional A Love Supreme, recorded in late 1964-as clearly as you can hear melody or rhythm. As a consequence, all of it can appear set on one venerable plane. Included on the album-which comes either as a single-disc version or a double-disc with alternate takes, both including extensive liner notes by historian Ashley Kahn-is a sunny, bright-tempo melody (the theme from Vilia, written by the Hungarian composer Franz Lehár for the operetta The Merry Widow ); a downtempo, minor-key, semi-standard ( Nature Boy, from the.
