The original October Revolution of 1917, in which Lenin and company stormed the Winter Palace and ended Russia’s brief flirtation with Democracy, has long been celebrated on November 7th with a giant parade through Red Square due to the fact the Bolsheviks changed the country’s calendar and shifted everything 13 days into the future. The parade even went on when the Germans were on the outskirts of Moscow in 1941, and the soldiers marching kept on walking the short distance to the front lines.

Obviously you can throw things away, but if you have anything in good condition you can also sell it or donate it. Some specific items may also find a new life in the digital world, or you may have friends who want some of your things. Donating is the easiest way to throw your crap away without actually doing that. Finding your local Salvation Army or Goodwill is a fine way to start. Additionally, if there’s a particular cause you’re passionate about you can often find organizations that will take some of your things. Actually, throwing things away is not always so easy if you want to do it as safely as possible. Your technology, for example, doesn’t sit so well when buried in the planet. If it’s something you can recycle, take the effort to recycle it.
Never throw anything out. People who have experienced years of deficit, just cannot throw out anything. Well, this is one symptom of the Soviet hangover. Inside the apartments cupboards, shelves, and wardrobes will most likely be full of useless gubbins as well - some Russians just can’t face throwing things away.
