The first contact between Charlemagne Palestine and the Sonnabends took place in Paris with Simone Forti. It was 1972 and collaboration immediately started. Some time after the composer gave up performances and his sculpture was presented more in Europe than America. At the end of the 1990s a new meeting happened and the Sonnabends announced that they had decided to leave Soho for a bigger space in Chelsea and proposed again for Charlemagne Palestine to create a disc.

Charlemagne Palestine has been played on NTS over 20 times, featured on 20 episodes and was first played on 24 December 2013. Charlemagne Palestine (born Charles Martin or Chaim Moshe Tzadik Palestine 15 August 1945 or 1947, in Brooklyn, New York) is a visual artist, composer and performer in the minimalist movement of the 60's and 70's (along with Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Terry Riley). He disappeared from the music scene in the late 70's and didn't return until the early 90's.

Charlemagne Palestine is an American minimalist composer, performer, and visual artist. A contemporary of Philip Glass, Terry Riley, Phill Niblock, and Steve Reich, Palestine wrote intense, ritualistic music in the 1970s, intended by the composer to rub against Western audiences’ expectations of what is beautiful and meaningful in music. Charlemagne Palestine (born Chaim Moshe Tzadik Palestine) is a performance artist from New York. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1947, Palestine began by singing sacred Jewish music and studying accordion and piano. At the age of 12 he started playing backup conga and bongo drums for Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Kenneth Anger, and Tiny Tim. From 1962–69 Palestine was daily carillonneur for the Saint Thomas Episcopal Church in Manhattan, eventually creating a piece that consisted of 1,500 15 minute performances. Continuous Sound Forms. Charlemagne at Sonnabend.

Fondation Charlemagne Palestine. A recording of Strumming Music was also Palestine's first album, released in 1991. Palestine's performance style is ritualistic: he generally surrounds himself (and his piano) with stuffed animals, smokes large numbers of kretek (Indonesian clove cigarettes), and drinks cognac. Fondation Charlemagne Palestine is at Park Avenue Armory.
