As a whole, I often find this performance less gripping than the Klemperer or the Horenstein performances. However, Peter Schreier as the tenor truly delivers what I believe to be the best performance on record that I have heard. From the very first line in "Das Trinklied Vom Jammer Der Erde" to the final drunken cry in "Der Trunkene Im Fruhling", Schreier is such a joy to listen to.

It allows you to hear the different parts of Mahler's dense score so clearly (which isn't always easy to do outside of a concert hall). The first transcription was done by Arnold Schoenberg (& completed by Reiner Riehn). I know that Mahler preferred a male singer in the alto part (though he didn't live to hear Das lied, if memory serves), and generally, in his orchestral song cycles, but I like women singing the alto part, especially Dame Janet Baker. To summarize, my top five recordings are: Klemperer EMI, Walter NYP, Reiner CSO, Kubelik Audite, and Giulini DG.

For Horenstein, Das Lied clearly follows on from the vast symphonic structures of the Eighth symphony, and this performance, if nothing else, clearly presages the harrowly finality of the Ninth. There is a similar, epoch-shattering attempt to recreate the heart-rending beauty of the final movements in both of Horenstein's performances of these works. However, in both this Das Lied, and his 1966 Mahler 9 with the LSO, Horenstein evidently believes the measured distance of the movements' development somehow refines the tragedy of the unfolding drama.
