Album · 2017 · 13 Songs. Dutilleux’s harmonies balloon and fade, sounding almost psychedelic against Debussy’s minimal, effusive lyricism and unbounded progressions. Through his cello, Leonard Elschenbroich discloses the mysteries of these richly hued works. Siècle BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Leonard Elschenbroich (cello), Alexei Grynyuk (piano); BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra/John Wilson, Stefan Blunier. Stefan Blunier and Leonard Elschenbroich are certainly not the first to conspire in a drastic slowing down of the second theme in the first movement of the Saint-Saëns Concerto, and almost as certainly, despite anything I might say, they will not be the last. But I shall say it anyway – that this composer was quite capable of marking the passage ‘molto più lento’ had he so wished, and that this interference does no favours to the work’s structure, spoiling, among other things, the effect of the following Allegretto

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (BBC SSO) is a Scottish broadcasting symphony orchestra based in Glasgow. One of five full-time orchestras maintained by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), it is the oldest full-time professional radio orchestra in Scotland. The orchestra is based at City Halls in Glasgow. The BBC opened its Edinburgh studio in 1930, and decided to form its own full-time Scottish orchestra to complement BBC orchestras already established in London, Manchester and Wales

Elschenbroich's dark, lean sonority cuts across other expectations too. The sequence begins with a fiercely immediate realisation of the Dutilleux concerto, the most recent score, here rather sounding it: rivals tend to inhabit a subtler, more rarefied (more French?) sound world. Then a switch to cello and piano for Messiaen, the fifth movement of his Quatuor pour la fin du temps sounding plaintive rather than earth-shattering in this context. Still, we shouldn't obsess about authenticity.
